Digital Dentistry

Digital Dentistry Technology That Makes Visits Easier for Older Adults

At Josey Lane Dentistry, technology has one job: to make care clearer, gentler, and more comfortable. Our approach to digital dentistry in Carrollton, TX is designed with our patients in mind, many of whom are Seniors, Super Seniors, and medically complex patients who benefit from shorter, easier appointments and clear explanations. From iTero digital impressions to digital X-rays and intra-oral cameras, our tools help Dr. Melissa Scaggs and Dr. Lindsay Penchan see more, explain more, and recommend conservative treatment with confidence. We welcome new patients and work with Delta Dental.

Aging patients

Why Technology Matters for Aging Patients

Good technology supports good decisions. Clearer images help us catch small problems early, such as root decay or a crack under an old filling, when a small repair is still possible. Faster, gentler scans mean less time holding still in an uncomfortable position, which matters for patients with arthritis, back pain, or a strong gag reflex. And when you, or your adult child, can see an X-ray or photo on a screen, it is far easier to understand what we are recommending and why.

Digital X-Rays and Panoramic Imaging

Digital X-rays use much less radiation than older film X-rays, and the image appears on our screen in seconds. Panoramic imaging captures your entire jaw in one wide picture, helping us check bone levels, root tips, and areas under dentures that cannot be seen directly. We use digital X-rays during routine cleanings and exams and take only the images needed.

iTero Digital Impressions

If you remember a mouth full of thick putty for a dental impression, you know how unpleasant that can be. Our iTero scanner replaces it with a small wand that takes digital pictures of your teeth in minutes, with no mess and far less gagging. This is especially helpful for older patients, anyone with a sensitive gag reflex, and patients who find it hard to sit still for long. We use digital impressions to plan crowns, bridges, guards, and other restorative work.

Intra-Oral Cameras

An intra-oral camera is a small, pen-sized camera that shows a magnified view of your teeth on a screen next to your chair. Instead of just hearing about a cracked filling or an area of decay, you can see it, and so can a family member helping you make decisions. It takes the guesswork out of your treatment plan.

Conservative care

How Technology Supports Conservative, Personalized Treatment

Because we can see problems clearly and early, we can often choose smaller, less invasive repairs, or confidently recommend monitoring a stable area instead of treating it. Comparing images over time also helps us tell the difference between a spot that is changing and one that has been stable for years. Dr. Melissa Scaggs, who has focused on senior patient care since 2014 and is a Dementia Certified Practitioner, uses these tools to explain conditions clearly to patients and caregivers alike. Dr. Lindsay Penchan relies on the same imaging when planning root canals or extractions. Learn more about both doctors on our About Us page.

Frequently Asked Questions

Are digital X-rays safe for older adults?
Yes. Digital X-rays use significantly less radiation than traditional film X-rays. We take only the images needed to monitor your oral health safely, based on your individual risk.
What is an iTero digital impression like for patients?
It is quick and comfortable. A small wand takes digital pictures of your teeth and gums, with no putty trays. Most scans take just a few minutes, and you can watch the image build on the screen.
Can my family see my X-rays and photos?
Yes, with your permission. We are happy to show images to an adult child or caregiver during your visit so everyone understands the plan. Call 972-242-1592 if you have questions.
Does using an intra-oral camera help me understand my treatment?
Yes. Seeing a magnified photo of your own tooth or gums makes it easier to understand what we are describing, ask questions, and feel confident about your decision.
