6 Dreamlike Summer Vacation Alternatives

You have a few options. Maybe you already have your vacation destination planned, and you just want to get there and unwind. Or, maybe you’re really hankering for something new. In the case of the latter, whether it’s this year or next, there are countless destinations around the world that you’ve probably never thought of.

If not this summer, how about next?

Our mission in this week’s blog is to take you on a little trek and to get the wheels turning. These can be dream destinations for next year, or simply some ideas to help you unlock what you’re really hankering for!

  1. Malaga, Spain

Malaga is a popular tourist destination, so you won’t be discovering a “new world” in that way. But if you really love foods that mix traditions, this city along the southern coast of Spain will bring you endless options. With Morocco just on the other side of the water, southern coastal Spanish cuisine is rich in dishes that take from northern Africa and from Europe. And as a coastal city, of course, there’s no shortage of spectacular seafood!

  2. Antigua, Guatemala

Antigua was the first capital of Guatemala, while modern-day Guatemala City is actually the country’s third capital. Antigua was switched out as the nation’s capital for neighboring Ciudad Vieja after a devastating earthquake, which makes sense when you arrive to Antigua—the small town is cradled between the three volcanos, one of which is active and might puff smoke in the distance during your stay. Some people will think you’re talking about the island nation if you choose this vacation spot, but the city of Antigua Guatemala is a gem to educate them all about. There are loads of resources for tourists, too, as the destination is popular among local and international travelers. And once you look at a map you realize how close it really is, it’ll just be a matter of making sure your passport’s up-to-date.

  3. Yellowstone National Park

You might be part of a family that already has a rich tradition of visiting Yellowstone National Park. But for anyone who hasn’t made the trip, perhaps this is the summer to do it. The park was actually established in the late 1800s, and has provided a rich history of celebrating our national treasures. Especially if you can handle the road trip, consider the park as your next destination!

  4. Santiago, Chile

The capital of Chile is in winter while we’re in summer, but the long trek is worth it if you’re a lover of wines. Perhaps you’ve already had the luxury of experiencing fine wines across Europe, but never thought to look south for more vine-ridden options. Santiago is a bustling metropolis, and has more history and classic architecture than you realize with the Spanish first landing there in the 1500s.

  5. Washington, D.C.

If you haven’t already ventured to the nation’s capital, this summer might be the time to do it. The monuments and museums in D.C. are some of the most awe-inspiring we enjoy, and spending time in the beautiful East Coast cities around the metro will be well worth your while. And, it’s another destination that doesn’t require a passport.

  6. Havana, CubaTravel to Cuba is still somewhat restricted for U.S. citizens, and your purpose for going there has to fall into one of 12 State Department-approved motives. But if you are able to make the trip, do so before the time capsule that Havana is ruptured by the growing foreign imports. Not only the beaches, but the city and the incredibly rich culture of the island are just a stone’s throw away for you to explore.

Whether you’re vacationing somewhere this summer or next, or just needed to put on the thinking cap to start weighing your options, the world is your oyster if you’re willing to travel to see it. Consider new vacation destinations this year.

And, we’re obligated to say it as your dentist—always travel with a manual toothbrush, or your electric one might lose charge or battery during a longer-term trip. Try new foods, but keep up with your brushing and flossing, too! And be sure to come back with stories.
